CONGRATULATIONS! to the Palestinian Territories from an old counter-terrorist enemy: U.N. APPROVES your bid for OBSERVER STATE STATUS!

CONDOLENCES to Israel for their Pyrrhic Victory with Gaza from an ex-ally.  WELCOME to the  NEW WORLD of becoming an “ORPHAN/ WARD” of the US GOVERNMENT.

Events in the Middle East move faster than tweets in hyper-space.
One day the IDF is testing out their Iron Dome Missile Defense System against their own.  Remember,  Hamas is Israel’s home-grown ‘terrorist organization’, created in Berzeit, Gaza, by Shin Bet [Israeli FBI].  And in a ‘blow-back’ strikemuch like the CIA-created Al-Qaeda , Hamas provoked the IDF to test it’s newly developed Iron Dome Defense system, shooting Iranian shipped Fajr-5, shipped from Somalia, Yemen through Egypt, through the Sinai,  into Gaza.
And the next week, Peace is initiated by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi of the Islamic Brotherhood and the UAE, Turkey and the US.
Then the day after President Morsi announces the temporary ‘cease-fire’ between the IDF and Hamas,  he unitarily usurps all democratic power from the Egyptian Constitution.
Not to be out done, the Saudi Arabian King Abdullah,  announces that he is in a ‘moribund condition’ but not yet dead but will soon assign a new line of succession once he definitely decides to die.
But then, in a moment of resurrection and defiance, the once ignoble, inert, if not ossified, United Nations General Assembly, elevated the status of the Palestinian National Authority [my old nemesis Arafat’s PLO] from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state”.
In simple English, this means that finally after decades of fighting and terror the PLO, nee the Palestinian Authority, will finally see daylight where they will be correctly recognized as legitimate state and not a ‘terrorist’ organization.
As someone, who has fought against the PLO, Arafat, the PFLP,  Dr George Habash and Abu Nidal and countless other Palestinian ‘offshoot terrorist groups’- this makes me one very happy ex-counterterrorist professional.
Many of  you might remember that in one of my former blogs I once commended both Arafat and the PLO- thanking them for having saved the lives of our FSOs, during the Civil War in Lebanon in the 1980’s.
But also many of you might also remember one important axiom that I had always followed: Always treat your adversary “terrorist” with RESPECT because the next day or year, he/she will become the President of that country
Well, that axiom has been time-tested throughout decades and countless countries including our own ‘Founding Fathers’.
So who really loses out in this entire medley of changes?
In my humble opinion, it is unfortunately, Israel
  Why, you ask me?
And how could I even say that—especially when the IDF ‘won’ the war against those ‘terrible terrorists’ Hamas in Gaza?
The answer is quite simple.
The IDF won a “pyrrhic victory” which means if they have to fight another war against Hamas and/or Hezbollah using the Iron Dome or their newly  developed David’s Sling Weapon System which had quietly intercepted missiles in the Negev Desert on November 20, 2012—Israel will EVENTUALLY LOSE COMPLETELY
One more victory like the one they had with Hamas or Hezbollah where the IDF soldiers did not even go into Gaza will, I assure you, spell the end of the IDF and more importantly the State of Israel
Paradoxically with all of it’s missile systems  developed jointly by  Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in concert with Raytheon, utilizing  a two-stage Stunner interceptor missiles that unlike the Tamirs [used in the Iron Dome],  will hit inbound rockets directly and destroy them with sheer kinetic impact.  Technically,  the Stunner is also larger than the Tamir and with more sophisticated guidance and propulsion systems so it can travel further than the stratified missile systems of the much –touted Iron Dome.  David’s Sling can intercept  unmanned UAV’s,  short-ranged ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
So in simple strategic terms, the Operational Pillar of the Iron Dome Defense can intercept short and long range missiles shot from Gaza. But a far greater concern for Israel is Hezbollah,  the Shi’ite militia in Lebanon which has more sophisticated weaponry than Hamas.
For example, Hezbollah’s inventory holds over 10,000 rockets ranging from 122 mm BM-21 type rockets to the much larger and longer ranged 610 Mm Zelzal-2 rockets.
So between Hamas and Hezbollah, Israel has become nothing more than an encapsulated “kill zone”.   If and when, both ‘terrorist groups’ decide to fire simultaneously, the IDF and all it’s offensive and defensive weapons will exhaust itself in a spasm of effort that in the long run will transmute Israel into a ‘failed state’ within less time than Israel’s past efforts in having to negotiate Peace Treaties with it’s collective enemies.
This Gaza ‘victory’ is temporary and illusionary.
At best, Israel has done two very important things.  It’s made itself the fifty-first State of the United States with Tel Aviv,  as the capital city.  It is no longer a viable country suis generis.
Secondly, it guaranteed that without any new strategic or diplomatic initiatives, it has become increasingly more and more ALONE.  Rather than a ‘ward’ of the US, in reality it is the “ORPHAN” of the MIDDLE EAST—bereft of friends and succor.
So, as a former military, intel, diplomatic ally of Israel,  I really pity it for the lack of time that the leaders over sixty years took to create a new strategy and tactic of ‘engagement’ with their neighbors - Iran, Turkey and others rather than resorting to the very primitive and tiresome position of being ‘surrounded by enemies’ and ‘helpless to do anything but attack’.
As for the myth that Israel is the homeland of the Jews, I have discussed this issue before in other blogs.  Please refer to the books such as the Transfer Agreement by Edwin Black and The Holocaust Industry by  Norman Finkelstein.
The simple matter is that it never was or will be a haven for jews as long as the United States remains a land of freedom, opportunity and diversityJudaism is only the cover that Israel has left to legitimize a ‘moribund’ or dying state
With 300,000 protestors in the street yelling for equal pay, the end of corruption and the end of war,  Israel has more to concern itself with than engaging in a demonstration to the military bazaar of the world, that it can manufactures instruments of war that can kill at will any and all civilians.   Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and many other authoritarian leaders with much stronger armies and tougher leaders became extinct by the sheer weight of their moral ignominious behaviors  mass killings of innocents—Jew, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Confucius.
However, I would like to end this particular blog on a really happy note.
And that is to congratulate once more,  the Palestinian Authority for their long hard, well-earned fight –in all it’s meanings –for the long-awaited and long-due recognition of the Palestine People and their right to a legitimate state.
On a minor note of warning—it would serve our American Administration to facilitate this inevitability and do nothing—but nothing—to impede the State of Palestine.

  1. With your gifts for past negotiation success, why don't you go to Israel & offer your talent?
    They will pay you well.
Your commentary invites proponents of international Shariah law.
    Is that what you want?
Will UN RECOGNITION STOP THE homicides?
Emboldening savages is a positive outcome?
Hamas is merely in ceasefire mode until the next arms shipment arrives--you know that.

I am quite surprised you have decided Israel is obsolete.
You could say that about the Constitution also.

Rep. Allen West who lost his seat by massive obama FRAUD:
Statement on UN General Assembly Vote on Palestinian Statehood
(WASHINGTON)---Congressman Allen West (R-FL) released this statement today regarding the United Nations resolution upgrading the Palestinians' status to a nonmember observer state at the United Nations, approved by a more than two-thirds majority of the 193-member world body -- a vote of 138 to 9:
"Slowly but surely, hostile nations are tightening the noose around the sovereign State of Israel. Only those who are not students of history, Islam or the Muslim Brotherhood will be surprised by these actions.
It is naive to think this vote is solely about human rights or a homeland for Palestinian people. This vote is yet another step towards delegitimizing Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state with Jerusalem as its undivided capital.
When the cease-fire brokered by the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Egyptian government was announced, Hamas and the Palestinians celebrated it as a victory over Israel, not as a step towards peace.
The true intentions of nations such as Iran and Syria are one thing, but it is deeply disappointing when countries such as Austria, France, Italy, Norway and Spain vote in lockstep. It is unfortunate that so many in our own country, including those in this current administration, continue to ignore the reality."

  2. I don't know, Steve - what kind of "state" is this going to be? It looks like an Indian reservation from here - with no army, no defensible borders and no natural resources - a source of cheap labor for Israel at best. Abbas might go along with this, but the Palestinian people won't. A two-state solution is not the answer. Only a one-state solution that ends the perversion of Judaism known as Zionism once and for all will end this conflict.

  4. I'm all for tightening the noose around Israel - all the way around Netanyahu's neck, if possible. I do agree with you that this is not really about a two-state solution or a Palestinian "homeland". It is about reconstituting the "Jewish state" of Israel as a normal democracy which both Jews and non-Jews who live there can regard as their homeland, that is, as a normal democracy like the United States. Until this happens, Israel will remain what it has always been, which is an apartheid state resembling South Africa. What are we? We are Jews born in the United States. The United States is our "homeland". My parents were atheists, whatever their ethnicity. I speak English, not Hebrew and I don't even know what all those Jewish holidays commemorate. But I agree with the orthodox rabbis of the Naturei Karta that political Zionism is a heresy. The solution I support is to for the Israeli government to offer full citizenship to every resident of the West Bank and Gaza, and to divide the whole area into districts each of which can elect a representative to a constitutional convention. They will hammer out a constitution that will have to involve full vertical integration of the army and the judiciary. Within this framework many different structures are possible. There should be a maximum of local autonomy. Once the constitution is complete, it must be ratified by the vote of the entire population of Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza - one man, one vote. Even when such political equality is negotiated, Jewish Israelis can still negotiate from a strong position. In South Africa the whites did not lose everything once political equality was negotiated. Israelis of good will should use their capital and their technical know-how to lift up their non-Jewish brothers and sisters. There will have to be some kind of "truth and reconciliation commission" as there was in South Africa, and a few big Zionists might end up on the end of a rope, which would not cause me to shed any tears.

    1. Tony Wicher, you maybe an atheist, but you are hoping for a miracle.

I highly doubt either the Palestinians or the Israelis are willing to live in the 'one state' solution you propose.

Study Israel's politics and the Palestinian's politics.

There is little or no sign at all either side will agree to your proposal.

Each side wants a state of their own.

I suspect your solution would lead to an "over-crowded rat cage" with irreconsilable differences where each side would be at daggers drawn and even the smallest spark would cause a confragration & bloodbath of unimaginable proportions.

Realism in geo-politics means not attempting to put a square peg in a round hole.

Your Idea, while noble and presented in good faith, does not fit into the real world of Israeli -- Palestinian politics.

Even a two-state solution would be hard enough to achieve -- truly worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.

I know you are not alone in this proposal, there are many good-faith Jewish Americans, who have presented similar proposals, so I have given thought about it, as I've heard variants of it before, but given the two parties' histories of mutual antagonisms (even hatreds), I just don't think it is a viable solution.

Unless, you know something I don't.

But please do fill me in on what I'm missing, to where the international community, let alone the Israelis and Palestinians, could think it would have any chance of working.

  5. Patriarch,

I few years ago I was looking at an aerial photograph of that huge wall, hundreds of miles long, separating Israel from the West Bank, and I saw that it was wrong. It was like a geometrical theorem to me, like the impossibility of squaring a circle. As Ronald Reagan would say, "tear down that wall, Patriarch". As the Berlin wall was the result of the unsustainable ideology of Communism, so the Israeli wall is the result of the equally unsustainable ideology of political Zionism, which it actually resembles in many ways.

  6. Patriarch wrote: "Your commentary invites proponents of international Shariah law. Is that what you want?"

Specifically, how does Dr. Pieczenik's post invite proponents of international Shariah law?

Patriarch wrote: "Emboldening savages is a positive outcome?"

Please, Patriarch, that's propaganda. If Palestinians have been "dehumanized" by operant conditioning, then who is doing the "conditioning" by controlling the environment?

Patriarch, don't Israeli govenment policies towards the Palestinians have an efffect on the Palestinians' behavior?

Patriarch wrote: "I am quite surprised you have decided Israel is obsolete."

I suggest Dr. Pieczenik is stating Israel is "obsolete" IF -- and only if -- Israel does not change its ways.

The "greater" Israel gambit (incorporating the West Bank and Gaza into Israel in a 'one state' solution) is worse than a crime, it is a mistake.

The Israelis won't tolerate equal civil rights for Palestinians (in order to maintain the "Jewish character of the State" and maintain Jewish control of Israel) and an apartheid state will not survive international condemnation.

Nor will the "transfer" solution survive international condemnation. Others rightly call the 'transfer' solution 'ethnic cleansing'.

Yes, Patriarch, Dr. Pieczenik, in his own 'tough love' kind of way, is attempting to SAVE Israel.

A two state solution is in Israel's best interest.

This United Nations General Assembly recognition will prod Israel's government (whoever leads it) to negotiate in good faith with the Palestinians.

Netanyahu and his circle have made a catastrophic misjudgment of American support for eventual apartheid and imposition of the final solution: Transfer of all Palestinians out of Palestine.

Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir both started out as terrorists, BUT both wanted to be known to history, both the world's and to THEIR people's, as statesmen and humanitarians -- that their People were humanitarians.

Yes, that's right! Both Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir wanted the Jewish People of Israel to be known to history as humanitarians worthy of a noble place in world history.

Thus, BOTH Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir were persuaded or believed Palestinian statehood was necessary to that transformation Dr. Pieczenik spoke of, from 'terrorist' to 'statesmen'.

Yitzhak Rabin also knew for Israel to move to a 'normal' nation (even though he had been a general in the IDF dedicated to Israel's survival) status with peace that Israel had to come to terms with the Palestinians.

Rabin was murdered by Israeli extreme right-wingers (those who wanted a "greater" Israel) for his troubles.

Sadly, many neoconservatives, here, in America have given Netanyahu bad advice that played on Netanyahu's own predispositions and his bloated ego.

Dr. Pieczenik is trying to save Israel.

The Israel "can do no wrong" crowd or "let's give Israel a blank check" crowd are like enablers of an alcoholic.

Dr. Pieczenik is attempting an 'intervention' before Israel self-destructs.

Those that think Israel can get away with apartheid or transfer are deluded.

Those that think Israel can be totally isolated from its neighbors and America, too, are naive at best or monstrous at worst.

Will Israel be a moral state that World Jewery can be proud of after the Israeli government imposes the final solution?

(How many Palestinians would be killed in the attempt to transfer all Palestinians out of Palestine?)

After the Israeli government kills its way to a "greater" Israel?

Patriarch, if you want Israel to achieve acceptance as a noble and moral nation in good-standing with the rest of the family of Nation-states, Israel must come to terms with the Palestinians in a just and mutually beneficial result.

    1. I think you should make a pilgrimage to Israel & do a analysis on the lifestyle of all Israeli citizens who are Arab. Be sure to ask them on your questionnaire if they would relocate to any state in the 57 state caliphate, or Jordan or gaza or the West Bank.
      You can anticipate the answers.
As for dr. P. I recommended he take his wisdom directly to the KNESSET.
And as for modern Israel, the next war will be primarily cyber, which Israel has been the international forerunner.

    2. In 2003 the long wished for Israeli dream of eliminating the Iraqi Ba'ath miraculously materialized. But in so doing the US vs. Islam world conflict they engineered engulfed the region in horrific wars in which girls and men were raped, children and grandparents were slaughtered, and millions plunged into poverty and desperation.

It's fitting that after such a crime committed for the sake of their own security that Israel should reap the whirlwind by now facing an array of NEW THREATS from all their Arab neighbors - threats which will mean the end of the Jewish state.

The moment I heard the news that Mubarak was leaving the first thing I predicted was "Now weapons will finally reach Gaza, and that will change everything."

And it took no Einstein or Jean Dixon to see such would happen.

Israel has the best economic/social/legal/press/political system in the region - THAT'S A FACT.

But it has this one racist problem - it makes Jews a priviliged class which seeks to maintain itself as the majority in the Kenesset forever. In order to do this they must deny the return of property and extension of citizenship to the legions of Palestinian Arabs who fled Israeli terror in 1948.

The one state solution is the only answer possible. Not that the Likud will even settle for the two-state solution [new "settlements" approved this week and forever].

In time Israel will be isolated diplomatically first, with the likely leading issue being their illegal nuclear program. Then the Arabs will begin enforcing the Israeli embargo, which means it will apply to the US and Europe and China IF THE WANT ANY OIL FROM THEM.

And unfortunately violence will have to play a part.

For those of you who dispise the Palestinian Arabs' use of terror remember two things - it's all they have, and also it was all the founders of Israel had also.

Everyone over their has gallons of innocents' blood on their hands.

    3. Patriarch,

Your assumption is not correct. I am an American who lives in America.

You may have a point regarding Britain (I have heard there are issues in Britain with islaminism & the law), but at this point Sharia Law is not a serious issue in most of America, besides an occasional anomalous court decision (certainly not in my state).

But I asked you a question: "Specifically, how does Dr. Pieczenik's post invite proponents of international Shariah law?"

Your answer is non-responsive. You never answered my question.

In fact, most of your reply is non-responsive to the points of my comment.

Rather, your proposed question to Israeli Arabs whether they would move to another country is a distraction or dodge because my comments had little or nothing to do with whether Arab Israelis are happy or not.

The issue was the formation of a Palestinian state and more specifically the United Nations General Assembly recognition of Palestine.

But to your proposed question and implication, there are reports that Arabs in Israel feel like second class citizens. Whether they want to move is another question, as perhaps it is the land their ancestors have lived in for centuries, perhaps, even millenium, therefore, they have no intention of moving, just like their Palestinian brothers & sisters.

      Per Wikipedia, Racism in Israel:

"According to the 2004 U.S. State Department Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for Israel and the Occupied Territories, the Israeli government had done 'little to reduce institutional, legal, and societal discrimination against the country's Arab citizens.'"

Whether the next war is cyber or not is irrelevant, the issue is how many innocent Israelis and Palestinians will die.

And whether the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could lead to a region-wide conflagration or worse...

I agree there is a design for world government and the U. N. is a forerunner of that, if not the instrument, itself, but I got news for you, there definitely are World Government factions which are Zionist.

But you are wrong about it being islamic, no, the World Government types are mostly atheists who want to replace God with their own power. Some call them Satanists, I call them incredibly selfish & arrogant, for they want to be the final arbiters of humanity.

They want to substitute themselves for God.

Oh, by the way, I voted for Romney (and share your concerns about Obama).

I have no delusions, but your assertion is instructive of your attitude: Anybody who disagrees with you is to be dismissed as delusional (so as to justify your dodging their arguments).

Meanwhile, you ignore facts & evidence which don't confirm your preferred world-view.

You ignore arguments and try to distract from your failure to respond to those arguments.

If this is as good as your argument gets, then you won't win many arguments.

      Especially with me.

    5. Patriarch,

      Thank you for your response.

My concern is with the innocent Israeli & Palestinian People who are caught in the cross-fire, less with the leadership.

Partriach wrote: "Based upon your POV the USA should return AZ NM TEX & PUERTO RICO."

Again, a distraction from relevant issues.

Patriarch, this discussion is about Palestinians and Israelis.

But it does raise a point of interest:
Partriarch, what country do you live in and what is your citizenship?

Today's Israeli-Palestinian conflict is seperated by time & circumstances from other past incidents.

Even accepting your implied point of moral equivalence, you don't point to bad behavior to justify other bad behavior.

But what I find interesting is since you apparently find moral equivalence, then you are stating Israel has a right of conquest to annex the occupied territories, Gaza & the West Bank, and incorporate them into a "greater Israel".

But that won't withstand international condemnation (see, different times, different standards, as well as different situations).

Patriarch wrote: "...then they can get down to the business of accepance."

      Acceptance of what?

      Conquest & subjugation?

Yes, you don't have to respond to my questions or comments at all (and to the extent you have I thank you).

But failure to respond to reasonable questions & comments is a portal to your intensions & objectives. Do you have solutions other than acceptance of conquest?

Certainly, a desire for conquest (or the benefits of conquest) doesn't care for reason or morality, it only cares about power & might, which makes the right.

But that's hard to defend from a moral perspective.

Israel is headed to trouble if "power & might, which makes the right" is the only justification in its lexicon -- denuded of morality.

It is not persuasive to others. It is a narrow justification persuasive only to the conquestors, themselves -- their arrogance & selfishness.

Patriarch, do you really think Israel can go forward on that basis?

Patriarch, you write of my "confusions", what confusions? This seems like a variant on your calling me "delusional" before because I don't agree with you and you can't respond to my arguments.

      Arguments like:

"Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir both started out as terrorists, BUT both wanted to be known to history, both the world's and to THEIR people's, as statesmen and humanitarians -- that their People were humanitarians.

Pieczenik spoke of, from 'terrorist' to 'statesmen'."

The poem you present is nice, but detatched from the facts on the ground of both sides of the dispute is again a distraction.

Patriarch, you are a master of distraction, which is, itself, an admission the justification for your position is weak, otherwise, you would make positive arguments, not distractions away from the points of your opponents.

Sadly, both sides learn to belittle the other.

Partriarch, it is you who wrote: "Emboldening savages is a positive outcome?"

Is that what you teach your grandchildren?

That Palestinians are savages, their children reaping the inheritance and implicitly deserve to die?

Your blindness to your own hipocrisy is evident for the readers to see.

Let me be clear, I don't think either side deserves to die:

Not the millions of innocents on either side.

Seemingly, these innocents, if your cold & hard-heartedness got its way, would die.

I pray, for the sake of the innocent, your perspective is "obsolete" because it only leads to conflagration, death, and destruction.

  7. And furthermore...

So does the US have gallons of blood of innocent, ordinary people on it's hands.

    In particular...

After the 1972 Munich Olympics fiasco psychic Jean Dixon counseled President Nixon that a similar event would happen to Americans somewhere in the world and he would be blamed and his Presidency destroyed.

NO JOKE THIS IS A TRUE STORY..

Nixon told Kissenger to direct the CIA to address the threat. CIA said force could not prevent terrorism and that the only solution was TO CO-OPT THEM BY FORMING AN ALLIANCE.

DCIA Helms gave the mission to Edwin Wilson [someone not unknown to myself] and Frank Terpel [who had a reputation as a nice guy and extremely effective officer]. Wilson formed an alliance with Khadaffi in Libya and Terpel with Idi Amin.

Scores of uniformed, active and non-active duty operators from the US went to Libya in this program. Huge amounts of US arms and equipment also. It was utterly and completely deniable as Wilson had just left CIA with no problem at all, and Terpel under a false legend that he was dabbling in currency trading in Afghanistan.

Both were working completely on orders from CIA the entire time.

The groups armed and trained thereby killed a lot of Israelis, British and others but no Americans until the program was ended when stupid US law enforcement jailed and convicted Wilson and indicted Terpel [who got away from the US with CIA assistance].

It was the US who was the hidden sponsor of terrorism until 1980 - to prevent Americans from being targets.

Only after the program collapsed in 1980 did Americans become targets, as in Lebanon shortly thereafter.

  8. Oh and I forgot to mention that Black September in particular was assigned an entire CIA task force to assist them with cash and security from the Mossad in exchange for leaving Americans alone.

For those of you who think the US and Israel have EVER been allies try explaining that.

It was US dollars which supported Black September after Munich, and no one in the CIA gave a shit how many Israelis were killed, particularly after the Israelis sabotaged the Hungarian uprising in 1956, tried to kill US officials in Egypt in 1952, killed American sailors on the USS LIBERTY and other sundry injuries and insults to AMERICANS.

The US govt has always been Arabist. It is only AIPAC which puts pressure on Congress & accompanies them on annual delegations to Israel. Congress believes the state dept is deceptive & spins ( lies) about almost everything from funding to diplomacy. Dr. P. has witnessed the career incompetents who put in as little due diligence as is necessary, to earn their pay scale.
Where do you get your info? Loftus: "The secret war Against the Jews"?
      or from a horse's mouthpiece ?
      Just curious?
Who funded the Achilles Laurel hijacking? An American was thrown overboard (Klinghoffer).

  9. In 1917, as the Ottoman Empire was collapsing, the British empire made a deal with the early Zionists, who were reactionary crackpots, for a "Jewish homeland" because they thought it would serve British interests in the area. Israel has served this purpose ever since. There is an Anglo-American-Israeli axis of power. But there is no honor among thieves - these wonderful allies and bastions of freedom and democracy are also busy stabbing each other in the back.

  10. I should add that the British are the psst masters at using religious crackpots, be they Zionists or Salafists or Mormons to divide and conquer and maintain imperial rule. They have been doing it for centuries.

  11. Patriarch,

The CIA program to support terrorist groups using Khadaffi and Amin from 1972 to 1980 is documented in various places, but finally affirmed in the Federal Court reversal of Edwin Wilson's conviction for shipping 20 tons of C-4 [the entire US stockpile] to Libya. Wilson's defense was that he was on orders from CIA, but CIA denied this for over twenty years. Finally, Wilson's attorneys were able produce CIA documents that CIA had lied in previous testimony about Wilson's employment. The Federal Judge involved [in 2002 or thereabouts] states in her opinion that Wilson was clearly working for CIA.

On a personal level my father was among many US government personnel who was involved in the program, and when I was twelve years old in 1972 I remember finding in his closet boxes of the first issue of the "Second Chance" kevlar vests he saved from his first trip to Tripoli that Christmas.

Regarding Frank Terpel there are several good documentaries featuring him [some on Youtube] and his story is very well known. He was targeted by the New York City Police of all people, and after his indictment he was spirited out of the US by the CIA and never returned.

The State Dept., CIA, and Joint Chiefs all opposed the creation of Israel in 1948 for the simple reason that there was no justification for partition along sectarian lines, and seeking to do so would disenfranchise Muslims living in the large areas devoted to a Jewish state. Truman decided otherwise however, but probably didn't expect Israel to survive past a few weeks. Israel did survive however with military assistance from Stalin via arms shipments from Czechoslovakia. This took the US by surprise, and thereafter all agencies sought to cooperate with Israel in a damage-limiting effort to prevent further Soviet influence. Because Israel was viewed with high suspicion all CIA-Israeli interactions had to pass through the desk of CIA Chief of Counter-Intelligence [James Angleton] to seek to maintain security. In 1956 this arrangement became extremely strained as Israeli agents in Hungary worked to oppose the uprising there, which was spearheaded by facists alligned with CIA. This was not unusual however as CIA was aligned with facists everywhere, and these same assets were sometimes oppossed by Israel. To seek to counter-balance this there was some meaningful intel sharing from Israel in the period when Israel penetrated Arab states from which Safardi Jews had immigrated in the 1950s. Iraq, Libya and Tunisia are examples where CIA benefited from this.

The Achille Lauro is an excellent example of the effectiveness of the CIA program in that no such American ship or plane or anything else was targeted all during this time. But terrorist operators in the field were not aware of this arrangement, and when INDIVIDUALS who happened to also be Americans were present in these otherwise non-American target facilities they would be at risk.

After 1980 when the program was shut down that of course is when Americans became targets, and the environment in Lebanon was rife with that, although among the PLO there still was good cooperation in protecting Americans from harm.

  12. Please allow me to recommend a book at this point in the discussion: "America's Nazi Secret" by John Loftus. A top Nazi hunter with the highest security clearance, he describes how thousands of heinous Nazi war criminals from Eastern Europe were let into the United States at the end of WW II and used as intelligence assets in the name of "anti-communism". They might have murdered thousands of Jews in ways so brutal that even Eichmann complained about the inhumanity, but as long as they were staunch anti-communists, they were A-OK. The most ironic part is that many were used on the recommendation of Soviet mole Kim Philby, which explains why the CIA's record of penetrating the Iron Curtain during the 50's was about zero percent, and also why the Soviets got the bomb so fast.

    ReplyDelete
  13. What else was the United States supposed to do?

I understand that many [though not all] of these assets had murdered Jews along with communists in eastern Europe, but that cannot I believe under the circumstances disqualify them from use.

The terrible fact is that in eastern Europe the only people willing to take up arms against the communists were basically facist/pro-Nazis who rounded up communists and Jews and delivered them to the Germans to be shot. These people were all the U.S. had to work with in post war efforts to "roll back" communist gains. In Hungary for example most of the communist leadership was composed of Jews who took refuge in the Soviet Union and returned after 1945. The uprising in 1956 was harshly anti-Semetic and led mostly by facists supported by the CIA.

Almost all of these assets were part of the German Gehlen network which was passed first to US Army Intelligence and then taken over by CIA.

Philby only brought a very few people into US use, and his damage came in projects where the US and Britain worked together such as in Albania.

Furthermore, CIA also was in partnership with facist/anti-Semetic groups all over latin America, but particularly in Argentina and Chile where large European populations existed which were influenced by far-right [often Catholic] groups from Europe.

    1. According to Loftus, the intelligence of the Gehlen network was totally unreliable and full of Soviet double agents, but they were supposedly anticommunist and that's all Frank Wisner Sr. cared about.

Why do you ask what other choice they had? Did the U.S. have to support Hungarian fascists in order to "roll back communism"? Anti-communism is an ideology more pernicious than Communism. Communism is just the previous bogy man we created before we came up with "Islamic terrorism".

      Delete
    2. Loftus is wrong about the Gehlen network.

The Gehlen network was actually less penetrated than any other group the US used. Loftus and his ilk have worked hard to throw dirt on Gehlen and his network, but the facts are that it was compromised little compared to other networks.

The simple truth is that normal people were not willing to take up arms against the communists in Europe anymore than normal people were willing to take up arms against the communists in Afghanistan in 1979.

Having done covert action myself let me tell you the simple truth.

Normal and ordinary people are not shooters and will always adapt themselves like sheep to whatever tyranny is imposed on them.

If you want to get people to take up arms, particularly at the vanguard, you have to work with extraordinary people who are willing to risk and kill and do other very unpleasant things, and this has nothing to do with being moral or nice.

Frank Terpel was one of the nicest, sweetest guys who ever walked the earth but that didn't mean he wasn't willing to form a very close personal friendship with a beast like Idi Amin in order to do his duty.

That's what being a spy is all about.

  14. Hitler was supported by many before he gained power because he opposed the 6 million strong, very violent communist party in Germany which was extremely violent and dangerous.

But AFTER Hitler took power he was supported by statesmen all over Europe and the US because without any inflation he eliminated unemployment in Germany in two years and doubled incomes there. It was his economic success which garnered him admiration worldwide while the democracies were wallowing in depression.

Pesonally I believe Hitler attacked the USSR pre-emptively to blunt a planned attack by Stalin. Stalin gave every indication of seeking to invade central Europe before 1945.

As for Hitler being a "mad dog," I beg to differ. I think he was like all bold and decisive men in that he over-reacted to perceived threats and took drastic action where he'd been better served with forebarance. In my view Hitler wasn't seeking to dominate anything but was motivated by defensive concerns.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Now while the CIA was supporting Nazis and facists worldwide...

Let me say something which will illustrate what actually was the situation within CIA.

I've mentioned before I was after 1992 a "babysitter" for CIA officer Lt.Col. David Strier, who was Counter-Intelligence in Italy until the elections there in 1956.

Strier was actually an assassin, and worked at a time when serving US personnel performed assassinations.

Stier also killed various people completely on his own initiative and without any sanction from anyone.

In particular he boasted to me that he was extremely offended by the former SS personnel he saw in Italy in the Summers there [with blood type tattoos, etc] and on more than one occassion he ordered the killing of several of these people by local buddies of his purely because he didn't like them.

That's what it was really like in the CIA in the 1950s and maybe beyond.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh and furthermore....

Strier was moved to Havana in 1957 where he was shot and stabbed by pro-Nazis there in a situation where the US was opposed to the local facists. "We were losing people to them," as Strier described it to me in 1993.

This was when, according to Strier, he was supportive of Castro, and remained an admirer of Castro even when I worked with him in the 1990s!

Strier was basically a socialist, claimed to be always for the working man and the little guy, and was very fond of Castro and his revolution.

And this was a guy who worked as an assassin directly for Jim Angleton.

What kind of crazy-ass place was that!

  18. In reading over the thread, it seems the critical word, to my way of thinking, is "obsolete", as in 'anachronistic':

Definition of ANACHRONISM: a person or a thing that is chronologically out of place; especially: one from a former age that is incongruous in the present.

I'm only speculating, but perhaps, Dr. Pieczenik is stating a settler enterprise where the goal is expansion via conquest & subjugation is "obsolete" in today's world.

Yes, in days gone past, including the U. S., territorial expansion was the "name of the game".

Kings & queens played the game of expansion, often going back & forth across the board with human pawns, to be sacrificed on the whim of the sovereign.

Of course, it was not limited to royalty, any chieftain or strong man could play, as long as he got others in the "tribe" to do the fighting & dying (often without telling the "tribe" what the real motive was all about).

Any study of history all the way back to antiquity will demonstrate such was the affairs of the "leaders of men".

But we, humanity, have come to a point where, with the advent of the "bomb", such conduct threatens the survival of the species.

And of a lesser concern, although quite important, is that with advanced economies & societies, we, as civilized Man, do not want to lose such advancements to the usual death & destruction territorial expansion can bring, whether of the imperial sort of expansion or settler sort of expansion.

I hope naked conquest & subjugation via either territorial, settler expansion, or imperial expansion, can be thrown into the "dust bin of history".

There have been several 'covers' for such activity in the 20th century, but that's what it all comes down to.

Can Man move to a cooperative & peaceful mode of behavior within the existing Westphalian sovereignty model of Nation-states without the imposition of a authoritarian construct?

The one-world government supporters do not think so. Thus, their solution is world governance (at least their publically stated rationale).

But democracy & representative government, from what I have observed, can not survive in a world governance structure, which, by it's nature & necessity, is a structure run by the Elite from the top down.

With the People being controlled like cattle at the Elites' direction supposedly for the People's benefit (at least that's their publically stated rationale).

In my opinion, decentralized power in the form of the Nation-state is still the best hope for the dignity of humanity and the recognition of the worth of the individual as expressed by the individual giving consent to the government.

This time, our time, will go a long way in deciding which vision will herald humanity in the 21st century.

And, for better or worse, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a central issue in answering that question. That is why this conflict's resolution is a vital national interest for the American People.

Click here for youtube of Nights in White Satin

Somehow, this song reflects on the issues we've been discussing.

      These questions of humanity.

What will our answers be. What sort of humanity will we create in the 21st century?

    2. One dimension is that the U.N. and other international institutions have been formed to seek to counter any kind of aggression. The nature of war in the 20th century made that necessary.

However I think there's another dimension here which has nothing to do with ideals or institutions.

The simple facts are that the Palestinian Arabs have some level of support from their ethnic and religious brethren. In purely power terms alone Israel has not succeeded, nor can they succeed, in defeating their indiginous people.

Another issue at play here is the modernity of the victim population. The Arabs in Palestine were not like the primative natives of the new world, the south Pacific or Africa. They were a mature society, and the Israelis used only terror and force to deal with them rather than any other more persuasive tools.
