Hamas Implements New Fighting Modus Operandi: “360-degree Front” Using “Tunnel Warfare” as an Operational Mode!
Presently,  IDF is unable to obtain military victory.  Despite a major preponderance of fire power and military superiority,  the IDF has discovered after almost four weeks of fighting in Gaza that MILITARY VICTORY IS ELUSIVE!
Why?

Hamas have learned to use underground tunnels as an operational mode of fighting.  In the NYTimes Article,  Aug.1, 2014, entitled “In Tunnel War,  Israeli Playbook Offers Few Ideas”, by Isabel Kershner (posted earlier),  she describes the following scenarios:

“Hamas has changed doctrine [from avoiding confrontations, my addition] and is using TUNNELS as a main method of operation”…..”Of the 32 fortified tunnels that Israeli military has exposed so far,  at least 11 run deep beneath the border into Israeli territory, others are part of an underground labyrinth inside Gaza connecting buildings, weapons stores and concealed rocket launchers.”

“…. Hamas gunmen who vanished from one house like magicians and suddenly popped up to fire at them from another. ….. ISRAELI  SOLDIERS  FIND THEMSELVES HAVING TO…. IMPROVISE”.

Improvise? That’s not a credible explanation for the IDF which has monitored the tunnels and military activities for years. 

What does the IDF improvisation really mean?

For the IDF this incursion into Gaza has been the third one in five years.   Unlike the previous conflicts where Hamas fighters no longer “merge into the crowded urban-landscape.  This time they were prepared for combat.”

What then does the IDF have to do in this type of ‘360-degree front’?

The IDF has to go house to house and check.  They continue to assault suspected Hamas neighborhoods with heavy artillery; creating large numbers of civilian casualties in the process.  According to a senior Israeli official,  Hamas ‘has raised its willingness to sacrifice its civilians to an art form.’  Yet the IDF still relies on an unproven military tenet called ’the DAHIYA DOCTRINE.’   The Dahiya Doctrine refers to the 2006 IDF Invasion of Lebanon,  attempting to knock out the command-and-control center of Hezbollah.  Ironically,  despite the fact that the IDF LOST that war and had to be bailed out by Condi Rice, then Sec State, the IDF mistakenly thinks that the Dahiya Doctrine is still applicable to Hamas.  The problem for the IDF is that Hamas has no centralized command and control area.  If anything,  the military arm of Hamas (The Al Qassam Brigade) is physically and psychologically separated from its ostensible titular head in Qatar,  Khaled Meshaal [a former physicist/ teacher]. 

The real question is what does Israel want? considering that they will not achieve a military victory.

No,  the IDF will never destroy all the tunnels and if the IDF thinks that they can vanquish Hamas….

I would answer by quoting the outgoing Director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency,  Lt-Gen. Michael Flynn:  “… if HAMAS WERE DESTROYED, THE REGION WOULD END UP WITH SOMETHING MUCH WORSE!”  or allow me to quote Friedrich Nietzsche “When the Gods are cruel they granted your wishes".

Why would Gen. Flynn say such a thing?

In 2009,  Hamas attacked the Salafist-Jihadist Group,  JUND ANSAR ALLAH, which had declared an emirate in Gaza.  Hamas immediately ATTACKED and destroyed the rajah Mosque thus destroying a far more lethal, extremist jihadist group. [if one can believe that such a thing exists] !!  Hamas KILLED 22 JUND ANSAR ALLAH members including its leader. 

Israel be careful!!  Tread lightly on this so-called ‘terrorist group Hamas’  because they are like the preying mantis, they maintain the proper eco system of violence and terror in the Gaza strip.  I think that Israel can live with Hamas.  The  consequences could be much worse for everyone.

Chinese Fortune Cookie Says: ”Zhou YongKang,  Corrupt  Chief of Powerful Domestic Security Agency to be Sent to Jail or Worse!”

In the recent Washington Post Article, July 29, 2014, entitled, ”China to Investigate once-powerful Zhou YongKang, former domestic security chief” by William Wan, the indomitable Chinese President Xi Jinping has once again struck a blow against rampant corruption in his bureaucracy by pinpointing for ‘execution’ the fearsome  Zhou Yongkang.

Unlike our US Presidents who have tolerated and even encouraged their political cronies to gorge themselves on the spoils of American politics,  legislation and cronyism, the new President of China, Xi Jinping,  a Princeling son of the Maoist Revolution has taken a different tact toward his bloated, inept bureaucracy.  In a series of swift investigations and subsequent indictments,  the Chinese President has focused his energies on cleaning out the vast nest of nepotism,  political cronyism and corruption replete in the major Chinese run giant corporation centered around oil, gas, food, export/import, real estate, military and domestic security [private/public].  This Chinese President has spared no one in the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Clearly,  his initiative is fraught with personal and professional danger for him and his family.  The president spent a considerable time in the USA as a student,  he feels that the growth of China depends not only on the hard working Chinese population but also on the elimination of any obstruction to that growth which may be distorted, diverted or undermined by corruption and political cronyism.

I write this short blog to point out that if a President of a country three times the size of America can take the time to ferret out the cancer,  commonly known as political corruption then it would behoove our own present and future US Presidents to do the same.  American Leaders!!! start reading Chinese Fortune cookies that have the names of potential US culprits who think that they or their relatives are immune from prosecution.

The worst that can happen is that we might one day justifiably indict a bureaucrat or politician for crimes committed against the American tax payer.  At least the Chinese leaders tried … which is more than I can say for our own Presidents… past… present and possibly….. future.

The Collusive Nature of the Hamas/Israeli War. Each Side Has “Legitimate Reasons” Not to end the war!

The Israelis/Hamas War has entered its fourth week of fighting.  The body counts on both sides of the conflict are becoming reminiscent of the 1960-70’s Vietnam War days when Viet Cong deaths were a measure of success.  Nothing could have been further from the truth then or now.

As civilian Palestinians die in droves and Israeli soldiers are killed and wounded in significant numbers,  the war proceeds without abatement.  In fact,  the recent 72 hour ‘humanitarian truce’ lasted only minutes before the mutual onslaught resumed in full force.

What then compels these two sides to fight so viciously and unrelentingly?
Neither side qua military force has anything to gain from cessation of war.  Hamas will incur casualties until it kidnaps an Israeli soldier which it will use for future ransoming of thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israelis jails.  The IDF will continue to destroy countless numbers of more tunnels buried beneath the rubbles of Gaza. Yet,  there is another more compelling essence to this dyadic relationship between Israel and Hamas.

It is what I call ‘the COLLUSIVE NATURE OF WAR’!
What do I mean by this word ‘collusion’? 

There is an unspoken nature to the relationship between Hamas and Israel where each understands that the other’s military entity serves a far more nefarious but serious purpose than just fighting.  In effect,  the collusive nature of the Hamas-Israeli war reaffirms once and for all that each military entity whether labeled ‘terrorist’ or ‘combatant’  justifies the very raison d’etre of the other’s existence.  Without the Hamas organization shooting rockets into Israel,  there would be no reason to create or implement a ‘Operation Dome’.

Sounds circular in reasoning?
Well, it is!  Israel knew all too well when it created the Operation Dome that the likelihood of creating a system of rockets that could protect that land mass of Israel was imperative,  if not highly justified, twenty-five years ago.  When Israel created Hamas,  twenty-five years ago in Ber  Zeit [Gaza] as a so –called ‘counter force‘ to the PLO,  it knew very well that it would one day need a ‘terrorist group‘ like Hamas to JUSTIFY THE EXPENSE and INITIATIVES TO IMPLEMENT AN OPERATIONAL DOME. 

They weren’t prescient.  Israel was collusive.  Similarly, when Hamas leaders were compromised by Mossad Operatives,  they knew that in order for them to continue to justify their existence as a legitimate representative of a competing Palestinian group vis a vis the PLO, the Islamic Jihad or even Hezbollah, Hamas had to be collusive with Israel and participate in the Kabuki of conflict.

Although all of this collusive behavior may appear nonsensical and self–destructive,  collusion in wars do serve the important purpose of maintaining the JUSTIFICATION for creating and supporting a military/terrorist conflict scenario.  This type of dyadic relationship requires the respective citizens to fund, manage and maintain large bodies of intelligence organizations,  military personnel/equipment in order to justify their war time economies and the presence of the political elite ruling at that particular time of the conflict.  Wars are the most effective way of corralling public sentiment and financial expenditures.

In the words of General Smedley Bulter, U.S.M.C, ‘war is a racket’.

However,  war is a ‘racket’ in which both sides have to agree that they both are willing to lose innocent people as well as warriors to achieve a collusive end,  whatever that might be!  And so,  Hamas and Israeli will continue their collusive tango until they are completely exhausted from “dancing” or until the “music” stops and weapons stop firing. Until then,  humanity has taken a major respite from morality and responsibility!
The price for this world’s indifference and insouciance?
